Khurda District Basketball Association (KDBA) provided the much needed boost for basketball in Orissa by organising an inter-school and inter-college tournament, which concluded in Bhubaneswar today.
Unit-9 Government Boys High School and Government College of Physical Education (GCPE) emerged champions in the tournament, which is conducted at the State Gover Sports Complex in Unit-1, in the memory of teenage basketball players, Akram and Snehasis, who died in a road accident.
In the school final, the Unit-9 team, comprising trainees of Government Sports Hostel, humbled Chilkarani English Medium School of Balugaon 57-13. Deepak Mania (18 points) and Erneus (12 points) did the bulk of scoring for the victorious team.
The inter-college final witnessed keen contest before GCPE beat Institute of Technical Education & Research (ITER) 68-57. Gorachand Mohanty was the top scorer for GCPE with 23 points, followed by Satyabrata Acharya with 22 points. Satyakam (11), Laxmidhar (11) and Safalya (10) were the leading scorers for ITER.
Higher Education Secretary Madhusudan Padhi gave away the trophies at the closing function. Local MLAs Bhagirathi Badajena and Bijay Mohanty were present on the occasion.
